What makes these houses hard to cover
Three things recur in McLean, and they compound. The footprint is large and often spread across three levels, so a single radio at one end of the house is being asked to reach the other end through the whole structure. The construction is solid — brick, plaster, stone chimney breasts — and every one of those materials costs signal in a way modern drywall does not. And the device count has grown: thermostats, cameras, doorbells, televisions, tablets, and a working-from-home household all contending for the same air.
The usual response is another mesh node, which is why so many McLean houses end up with three or four competing networks and handoff problems in the hallway between them. Wireless backhaul gives capacity back with every hop, so the node at the far end of the chain is the weakest thing on the property, in the room that needed the most help.
Fibre availability makes this counterintuitive. A household with gigabit service reasonably assumes the connection is fine and the problem must be the provider. The connection usually is fine. What fails is the distribution between the demarcation point and the far bedroom.

Access-point positions are chosen for coverage first, then checked against a real cable route through attic, basement, crawl space, or utility path. Where no clean path exists, that is said before the work starts, not discovered during it.

Separate what should be separated
Smart-home and IoT devices go on their own network segment so that a chatty thermostat is not competing with the household. Guest access is separated from the primary network.

Verify, then document
Coverage is re-measured after installation rather than assumed from the plan. You are handed access-point locations, cable paths, network layout, and configuration notes — so the next person to touch the system is not starting from nothing.

Why does WiFi struggle in McLean houses specifically?
Two reasons, and neither is the internet connection. Lot sizes put detached garages, pool areas, and guest structures well beyond the range of a router sitting in a basement office. And the construction — brick, plaster over lath, stone chimney breasts, and multiple floor transitions — attenuates signal far more than the drywall these systems are designed around. Adding a mesh node usually moves the dead zone rather than removing it.
We already have fibre. Why is coverage still bad?
Because they are different problems. Fibre determines how much bandwidth reaches the house; the network inside the house determines how much of it reaches the room you are standing in. A gigabit circuit terminating in a consumer router still leaves the far bedroom on one weak radio. Most McLean work we do is coverage and segmentation, not bandwidth.
How is this different from buying a mesh system?
Consumer mesh links its nodes over the air, so each hop gives back capacity, and the system decides placement by where a power outlet happens to be. A planned system runs Ethernet to each access point where the construction allows it, so every access point has a dedicated path, and placement is chosen from a survey of the actual property. It is also serviceable afterwards, because the cable paths and configuration are documented.
Do you have to open walls?
Usually far less than people expect. Attics, basements, crawl spaces, garages, and existing utility runs carry most cable paths in houses of this era. Where a clean path genuinely does not exist, we say so before the work starts and price the alternative rather than discovering it mid-installation.
