Executive Business Continuity
Never Freeze Mid-Call Again
Automatic failover, battery backup, and zero dead zones—because your reputation can't afford “Buffer Face.”
When “Can You Hear Me Now?” Costs You Clients
Our client is a business consultant who works from home in Leesburg, Virginia. High-stakes video calls with executive clients are a daily occurrence—presentations, negotiations, strategic planning sessions where every word matters.
The problem? Their primary internet connection would occasionally drop. Not often enough to switch providers, but often enough to create anxiety before every important call. The fear of freezing mid-sentence—what we call “Buffer Face Fear”—was affecting their confidence.
Manual solutions weren't acceptable. Fumbling for a phone hotspot during a client presentation? That's amateur hour. This executive needed invisible, automatic protection that would handle failures without anyone noticing.
The requirements were clear: automatic failover that switches internet sources so quickly that a Zoom call doesn't even hiccup. No manual intervention. No “just a moment while I switch to my hotspot.”
Beyond connectivity, they needed power resilience. Northern Virginia storms can knock out power for hours. The solution needed to keep the entire network infrastructure running on battery backup—router, access points, cameras, everything.
And it had to look professional. No consumer routers with blinking lights in the home office. This called for an enterprise-grade rack system that matched the client's professional image.
Enterprise Architecture for Executive Reliability
Dual-WAN Failover Gateway
The UniFi Dream Machine Pro SE serves as the brain of the operation. It continuously monitors both internet connections—the primary ISP and Starlink backup—using health checks every few seconds.
When the primary connection fails or degrades below acceptable thresholds, the UDM Pro SE automatically reroutes all traffic to Starlink in under 3 seconds—fast enough that your video call doesn't even buffer.
Sine Wave UPS Protection
Internet failover means nothing if a power outage takes down your network equipment. We installed a rack-mount sine wave UPS that provides 2-3 hours of clean power to the entire network stack.
The pure sine wave output is critical—it protects sensitive networking equipment and ensures the gateway, access points, and cameras keep running through extended power outages common during Virginia storms.
WiFi 7 Coverage Array
Three strategically placed U7 Pro access points blanket the entire property in enterprise-grade WiFi. These aren't consumer mesh nodes—they're the same access points used in corporate offices and hotels.
With 2.5GbE backhaul and WiFi 7 capabilities, our client can take video calls from anywhere in the house or yard with consistent, professional-quality connections.
Starlink Gen 3 Backup ISP
Starlink provides the independent backup connection that makes true failover possible. Using satellite infrastructure completely separate from ground-based ISPs means even regional outages don't affect it.
Configured in bypass mode, the Starlink dish connects directly to the UDM Pro SE's secondary WAN port, ready to seamlessly take over at 100-200 Mbps whenever needed.
VLAN Network Segmentation
Security isn't optional for business networks. We configured isolated VLANs to separate work devices, personal devices, IoT equipment, and the security camera system.
This means a compromised smart device can't access business files, and guests on the visitor network can't see anything else on the network.
Local Security Storage
Two G5 Turret cameras provide 4K security coverage with footage stored locally on the UDM Pro SE's internal NVR. No cloud subscriptions, no monthly fees, no third-party access to your footage.
Access recordings from anywhere via the UniFi Protect app, but your video stays on your property—not on someone else's server.
How Automatic Failover Works
Continuous Monitoring
UDM Pro SE pings health check servers every few seconds
Failure Detection
Primary ISP fails or degrades below threshold
Instant Rerouting
All traffic switches to Starlink in under 3 seconds
Auto Recovery
Switches back to primary when it recovers
Hardware Deployment Manifest
Professional Execution

The Command Center: UDM Pro SE, network switch, and rack-mount UPS organized in professional enclosure.

G5 Turret providing 4K coverage with zero monthly recording fees.

Clean cable runs and professional terminations throughout.

Confidence Restored
Mission Accomplished
Since installation, our client has experienced multiple primary ISP outages—and didn't even notice them until checking the system logs later. The failover worked exactly as designed: invisibly and automatically.
During a storm that knocked out power for 4 hours, the UPS kept the entire network running. While neighbors lost connectivity, our client continued their workday without interruption, running on battery power with Starlink providing internet.
The “Buffer Face Fear” is gone. Important video calls now happen with complete confidence, knowing that two layers of protection—ISP failover and battery backup—stand guard against connectivity failures.
Verified Outcomes
Zero Call Drops
Multiple ISP outages occurred—client never noticed during calls
Failover Tested Under Fire
Automatic ISP switching verified during real outages
4-Hour Power Outage Survived
Full network stayed online through extended storm outage
Professional Installation Quality
