The Complete Stack

Six Layers From Satellite to Screen

Starlink provides the WAN — the internet connection itself. UniFi provides the LAN — routing, switching, and coverage. Together they form a complete network that outperforms any consumer mesh system.

The Problem

Why Starlink's Built-In WiFi Isn't Enough

Starlink delivers excellent internet. But the stock router was designed as a basic access point — not as a whole-home network controller for 30+ devices.

Single Router, Single Location

Starlink's router sits where the cable enters your house — often a basement or utility room. WiFi signal degrades through every wall and floor between there and your devices.

No Network Segmentation

The stock router puts every device on one flat network: laptops, security cameras, smart plugs, and IoT sensors all share the same IP range with no isolation or traffic rules.

No Wired Distribution

Consumer routers have 1–2 Ethernet ports. There's no PoE capability, no managed switching, and no way to hardwire access points to extend coverage without wireless hops.

No Redundancy

The stock router has a single WAN port and no failover. If Starlink has a brief outage, your entire home — video calls, security cameras, smart locks — goes offline.

Configuration Modes

Three Ways to Configure Starlink Networking

The right configuration depends on your property size, device count, and whether you need failover.

Standard

Starlink Standalone

Best for: Small homes under 2,000 sq ft

Starlink's built-in router handles WiFi directly. No additional equipment. Works for small homes with fewer than 15 devices and no home office.

  • Starlink Gen 3 dish
  • Built-in Starlink router
MOST POPULAR

Recommended

Bridge Mode + UniFi Stack

Best for: Most homes with 20+ devices

Starlink in bypass mode → UniFi Cloud Gateway → PoE switch → hardwired access points. Full control, VLAN segmentation, and enterprise WiFi from one dashboard.

  • Starlink in bypass mode
  • UniFi Cloud Gateway
  • UniFi PoE switch
  • UniFi U7 Pro access points

Enterprise

Dual-WAN Failover

Best for: Executive homes, remote workers

Everything in Bridge Mode, plus a secondary ISP (Fios, Comcast) connected to WAN2. Gateway auto-fails over in under 2 seconds. Video calls never drop.

  • Starlink + primary ISP
  • UniFi gateway (dual-WAN)
  • PoE switch + access points
  • UPS battery backup

Who This System Is For

Every property has different network demands. Here's how the Starlink + UniFi stack adapts.

Primary Internet + Whole-Home WiFi

Starlink as sole internet source with UniFi distributing coverage across a 3,000–5,000 sq ft home. The most common configuration for rural and semi-rural Northern Virginia properties.

Starlink Installation

Backup Internet with Failover

Starlink as secondary WAN behind Fios, Xfinity, or T-Mobile Home Internet. Gateway auto-switches in under 2 seconds. Video calls and VPN sessions stay alive through ISP outages.

Executive Failover Systems

Multi-Building Estate Coverage

Main house, guest house, pool house, and barn on one network. UniFi Building-to-Building wireless bridges deliver 1+ Gbps between structures without trenching.

Estate Network Infrastructure

Home Office with Dedicated VLAN

Corporate-grade home office connectivity with isolated VLAN, QoS prioritization for video conferencing, and a dedicated hardwired access point at your desk.
