Why Professional Starlink Installation Matters

Starlink satellite internet delivers broadband speeds to locations where cable and fiber never reached — rural estates, wooded properties, and communities underserved by traditional ISPs. But the difference between a reliable 150+ Mbps connection and a frustrating experience often comes down to one factor: how the dish is installed.

SpaceX designed Starlink for self-installation, and for a single-story home with a clear southern sky, that can work. But across Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia, most properties face real-world challenges that DIY installation cannot solve: mature tree canopy blocking satellite signal, multi-story homes requiring roof-mounted positioning, HOA restrictions on visible hardware, and long cable runs from the dish to the router inside.

The Orbit Tech has completed 315+ professional Starlink installations across the DMV region since 2023. Our certified technicians handle the full scope — from line-of-sight analysis using the Starlink obstruction tool and satellite coverage maps, through mounting, cable routing, weatherproofing, and whole-home WiFi optimization. Every installation is backed by $2M liability insurance, and we coordinate directly with HOAs on architectural review submissions when required.

Common Installation Scenarios

Every property is different. Here are the most common installations we perform across Northern Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia.

Suburban Residential

The most common installation in Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties. Typically involves roof-mounting the dish above the tree line on a two-story home, routing the cable through the attic or along the exterior with paintable cable clips, and entering through a drilled port with silicone weatherproofing. Most suburban installs take 2–3 hours and fall in the $899–$1,099 range.

HOA note: We provide photo documentation and architectural review packets for HOA submissions. Most Northern Virginia HOAs approve Starlink under FCC OTARD rules within 2 weeks.

Rural Estate & Farm Property

Properties in Fauquier, Clarke, Rappahannock, and Shenandoah counties often sit on 5–50+ acres with heavy tree cover. These installations frequently require a custom pole mount (10–20 ft) positioned in a clearing, with a longer underground or aerial cable run back to the house. We use direct-burial rated Starlink cable or conduit for runs over 100 feet. Typical cost is $1,099–$1,299+ depending on cable distance and mount complexity.

Executive Home Office & Failover Backup

Professionals in McLean, Great Falls, and Bethesda increasingly use Starlink as a redundant internet connection alongside their fiber line. We install the dish, configure the Starlink router in bypass mode, and integrate it with a dual-WAN router for automatic failover. This ensures uninterrupted video conferencing and VPN connectivity even during Comcast or Verizon outages.

Multi-Building & Outbuilding Coverage

Farms, equestrian estates, and properties with detached workshops or guest houses need connectivity beyond the main building. We design mesh WiFi networks or run dedicated Ethernet backhaul to extend Starlink coverage across multiple structures — barns, pool houses, garages, and ADUs. Common in Warren, Madison, and Berkeley counties where properties span multiple buildings separated by 100–300 feet.

Starlink Hardware & Mounting Options

We work with all current-generation Starlink hardware and offer multiple mounting solutions tailored to your property.

Starlink Standard (Gen 3)

The latest residential dish is smaller and lighter than previous versions, making it easier to mount on a wider range of surfaces. It delivers download speeds of 50–200 Mbps with latency between 20–40ms — sufficient for streaming, gaming, and video calls. The included WiFi 6 router handles most single-story homes, but larger properties benefit from mesh expansion.

Starlink Business / Priority

For commercial applications and high-demand residential properties, the Starlink Business tier provides higher priority bandwidth during congestion, faster upload speeds, and a larger high-performance dish. We install Business-tier hardware at offices, farms, event venues, and remote work properties across our service area.

Mounting Methods

  • Roof Mount— J-mount or pipe adapter on asphalt shingle, standing seam metal, or flat roofs. Includes flashing and sealant for waterproof penetration.
  • Wall Mount— Masonry or siding bracket for eave-height positioning. Ideal when roof access is impractical.
  • Ground Pole— Concrete-set steel pole (6–20 ft) for properties with heavy tree canopy blocking rooftop line of sight.
  • Chimney Mount— Strapped chimney bracket for maximum elevation without roof penetration.

Performance Expectations

Real-world Starlink performance in Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia based on our 315+ completed installations.

MetricTypical Range
Download Speed50–200 Mbps
Upload Speed10–25 Mbps
Latency20–40 ms
Uptime99%+

The single most important factor affecting Starlink performance is dish placement. Even 2–3% sky obstruction from tree branches causes intermittent dropouts every few minutes. Our technicians use the Starlink app obstruction scanner and professional tools to find the optimal mounting position on your property before drilling a single hole. If a clear line of sight is not available from the roof, we recommend a ground pole in a clearing — a solution we deploy on roughly 30% of rural installations across Fauquier, Clarke, and Shenandoah counties.

After installation, we run speed tests on-site, document before-and-after results, and walk you through the Starlink app so you can monitor performance and manage your network independently. If your home is larger than 2,000 sq ft or has multiple floors, we recommend adding a mesh WiFi system to distribute the Starlink signal evenly — our WiFi diagnostic and mesh setup service starts at $199.
